Tokyo - Population: 2
A deadly pandemic sweeps across the world, and Yamada Daisuke is the only survivor in Tokyo. Get up early, fight rush hour, work until the last train – it’s all over. He doesn’t have to worry about anything anymore. Even money has lost its value because there is nowhere to spend it.
But things do get quite lonely as the last man standing. He has the city all to himself and no one to share it with.
One day he meets Sayaka – a girl who came from outside Tokyo. They decide to stick together because there is no one else left. A high school girl and an office worker. Two people who would’ve never met otherwise.
They decide to travel together all over Japan. Side by side. Partners at the end of the world. But what will they find on their journey?
“The world we used to know is fading away, and all we can do is watch it happen.”
Japan has fallen and most of its population has died at the hands of a pandemic.
Yamada Daisuke and Fujiwara Sayaka have settled at the southern end of Japan, in Kagoshima. The former office worker and former high school student stick together, doing their best to survive the winter. But without modern inventions, even the mild winter of the south is a challenge to weather.
But staying in one place feels like a shame, so the two of them decide to travel all the way to the northernmost part of Japan - Hokkaido. Get there by summer and return to Kagoshima before the winter.
All around them, the Japan they used to know is fading away. What will they find in these remains?
"We have all lost something precious somewhere down the long road of time."
A virus has wiped out most of humanity. The world humanity built is slowly fading away, sinking into the ground, returning to the soil.
Yamada Daisuke and Fujiwara Sayaka begin to figure out how to survive in a world without any modern comforts. Neither of them has any experience with farming, so they have to learn as they go. Sayaka knows it is best to stay in Kagoshima, but there is one more journey she needs to make.
In the future, Sayaka goes on a journey with her daughter, Hana, retracing the steps she once took with Yamada Daisuke, while trying her best to raise Hana in a world that shows no mercy to the unprepared.
The long road of time is filled with bittersweet memories. Will they find what they are looking for?
“Inside this room, under the faint moonlight, we were able to find small pieces of joy here and there.”
Fujiwara Sayaka and Yamada Daisuke embark on a final journey to search for survivors across the decaying remains of civilization. Sayaka is worried about their future daughter – how will she survive in a world without any modern comforts? What will the world look like a century from now? She knows she and Daisuke won’t be there to see it, but the child inside her will.
As they travel across the remains of Japan, Sayaka and Daisuke reveal each other’s past to each other so that they can move into the future without any doubts. What they were doing, who they were with – visiting their past selves in a world that has completely changed.
In this final journey, can they take a step into the future?
